This listing is for a 3D printed Hardanger fiddle built-to-order. Have you considered learning to play the Hardanger fiddle? This 3D printed Hardanger is a great way to start.
Your Hardanger is built-to-order, and I will reach out to you to discuss color options after you place the order. I generally recommend carbon fiber PLA (grey or black) for the body and bridge, and we can choose from Proto-Pasta’s premium (glittery, etc) PLA for the neck, tailpiece, and pegbox.
Please plan on 3 weeks for me to order materials, print parts, and build the instrument.
Body Style
The choice of body style is mostly a style choice, and there is only a little difference in sound. I do not currently offer any parts with inlay.
Standard: the standard body is the one with cutouts for bow clearance. It works well.
Trapezoidal: this body has no cutouts, but still has enough bow clearance. It has a bit more of an echo-y sound and I feel like it makes a good Hardanger. The black instrument pictured uses this body.
Tuner Setup
Visually, all of these tuner options look the same. All tuner options here have four playing strings and four understrings.
Basic: this uses all wooden pegs. It will work, but it is not the best tuning experience, as the understrings are super sensitive. A tailpiece fine tuner is provided for the E string.
Upgraded: for this build I use planetary geared pegs (Wittner brand) for the understrings and wooden pegs for the playing strings with a fine tuner on the tailpiece for the E string. This is a great balance and what I would personally build for myself. The black instrument pictured uses this tuner setup.
Premium: all Perfection planetary geared pegs. This is a spendy option, but it’s the lap of luxury! Most players I have spoken with prefer this setup. No fine tuners on the tailpiece.
Curious what a 3D printed Hardanger sounds like?
Listen to Amy Hakanson play my first (ever) Hardanger! (Note: while the grey fiddle in the video sounds OK, this fiddle has significantly improved sound with greater resonance, depth, and volume.)
Hardanger fiddles can be built up with a wide range of playing dimensions and setups. I have designed this instrument to balance the range of variations. If you have any questions about instrument setup please don’t hesitate to contact me.
