Modular Fiddle Printed Parts Kit (Violin, Viola, and 5-String)

This kit of parts includes all of the 3D printed parts you need to build up a Modular Fiddle of your choice.

Off-the-shelf parts are sold separately as a Modular Fiddle Off-the-Shelf Parts Kit. If you would like me to build the fiddle for you, just purchase this kit, a OTS parts kit, and the assembly labor.

Before you purchase, read through the step-by-step build instructions on the Build Info page. I will adjust the parts so that they fit together correctly, but otherwise they will not be sanded or finished.

Type of Instrument?

Choose between 4-string violin, 4-string medium viola, 5-string short (violin), or 5-string medium.

Short length is standard violin string length of 330mm. Medium is 360mm string length, similar to a 15-15.5″ viola. If you want something longer, contact us to order.

Which Tuner Style?

For any instrument, you may choose geared ukelele machines or peg tuners. Tuners are NOT included in this kit, but the printed part for each tuner style is different.

The uke machines give you fine-tuning accuracy without needing fine tuners, but they are a bit heavy and they change the style of the instrument to a more guitar-style look. They do not require special tools to install.

The peg option works for friction pegs (not recommended) or for Perfection or Wittner geared pegs. These require a pegbox reaming tool to fit, and can be difficult to set up, but they perform great and are lightweight.

Body Style

Acoustic is currently the only option.

Material

After you order, I’ll follow up via email to select colors.

Basic black and white PLA is the least expensive and looks surprisingly awesome. It will also ship within a couple days because I have this in stock.

Premium PLA lets you choose almost any PLA offered by Proto-Pasta. Premium (shown in photos) will get you the best sound and some cool color/glitter options. I may need to order materials for your build, so allow a few extra days.

Annealed premium gets you good sound and a 100% heat resistant fiddle, but limits your color options and is more expensive due to the secondary heat treatment process. For this option, you may choose from a range of colors for the pegbox and tailpiece, but the neck and body are limited to gray or black.

Do you want a 3D printed chin rest?

Select yes if you would like a 3D printed chin rest (you’ll want to sand it smooth). If you plan to use a wooden chin rest (Guarneri style fits the body best) then select no.

Note: PLA plastic fails quickly at high temperatures! Do not leave your instrument in a hot car! Unless it is made with annealed premium materials — then you can do whatever you want!
